RZD is the only company for the railway transportation within Russia. There are few absolutely DIFFERENT TYPES OF TRAINS in terms of their prices and quality, and better to know this in advance. Daily multiple high-speed trains SAPSAN, STRIZH, LASTOCHKA have a journey time of about 3,5-4 hours between Moscow-Saint-Petersburg and between Moscow-Nizhniy Novgorod (half way to Kazan). At the same time night trains with sleeping carriages have a journey time of 8-9 hours between Moscow and Petersburg and 6-7 hours between Moscow and Nizhniy Novgorod. Night trains between Moscow and Kazan have a journey time of about 11.30-13.30 hours. SAPSAN is the highest class train, STRIZH is nearly the same in quality. LASTOCHKA is the budget train (very limited service on board, twice more seats per carriage, less space between chairs, less WC cabins):

LASTOCHKA (“swallow”)

SAPSAN (“prergrine falcon»)

Air-flights are really recommended for the most remote transfers, even if change of flight in Moscow is needed. But as for the short transfers remember, that you have to spend more time to get to the airport, have to be there earlier before your departure time, and more time to get to the hotel from the airport of arrival, — all these make express trains transfers more quick and suitable. Exclusive charter flights can be worth mentioning for big groups or VIPs flying just to the match and back without accommodation or at least with one overnight.

Bad roads’ condition is one of ‘the biggest problems for all times’ in Russia, what can be found even in classic literature (big country/ lack of control, four absolutely different seasons from hot summer to frosty winter with very wet mid-seasons, too many wars influenced on mentality etc…). However, the roads are much better now and main intercity highways have to be fully ready for the coming biggest events. So, most desired travelers can just safely hire cars or use car/bus transfers to have stops wherever they want on the way between the match venues. It will be good to remember however that foreign languages are not so spread on the outskirts of the biggest cities. Get know also usual time of traffic collapses from your assistants.
